Antibody clears senile plaques
Article Abstract:
Immunization with the amyloid-beta peptide (A-beta), a 40-42-amino-acid protein, inhibits the formation of amyloid plaques and the related dystrophic neurites, according to research based on a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease. This research highlights the possibility of vaccination with A-beta against human Alzheimer's disease. However, this will not be possible until a number of issues have been resolved. These include whether it is safe to immunize people with high levels of a protein widely expressed outside the protective boundaries of the blood-brain barrier.

Rapid appearance and local toxicity of amyloid-[beta] plaques in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease
Article Abstract:
A mouse model with Alzheimer's disease is examined to explain the rapid appearance and local toxicity of the amyloid-[beta] plaques present in the brain of the patients. The findings show that the plaques develop within a time span of 24 hours and hence act as an important mediator of neuritic pathology.
